Struggling to Connect: When AI and Generation Gaps Collide
Who knows best - AI or human intuition?
Dear Gabrielle,
I'm feeling more lost than a needle in a haystack. For over 40 years, I've run Mary's Bakery, a little slice of heaven in our town. My chocolate chip cookies and raspberry pies have brought smiles to folks from near and far. But lately, business has been slower than a tortoise in quicksand.
My techy nephew – God bless his javascript-loving soul – offered to help. He set up one of those new-fangled AI social media managers to market to a younger crowd. But between you and me, those posts make me cringe more than nails on a chalkboard! They’re trying too hard to be hip with the lingo. My gut says we need some good old-fashioned warmth and charm.
Here’s my pickle – maybe I’m just an outdated relic with no sense for what will appeal to today’s youth. And if this AI is supposed to be cutting-edge, who am I to judge? I want to trust my nephew, but I also can’t bear to watch my beloved bakery go under.
What do you think, Gabrielle? Should I stick to my gut or leave it to the AI? How do I balance keeping up with the times versus staying true to myself? And is there a way to work this out without burning any bridges with my family?
Yours truly, Mary with the Outdated Bakery
Dear Mary the Mixture-Mixing Maverick,
I know it's tougher than burnt caramel to feel you and your nephew are baking different cakes these days. But his algorithm doesn't know your bakery like you do!
Start by inviting your nephew over for a cookie tasting session. Reminisce over the bakery's legacy and listen to his ideas. Show appreciation for his work while also trusting your senses - if an AI suggestion seems off, it’s probably time to toss it out.
Next, let's shake things up with a taste test twist! Have a focus group of local teens try your classics next to trendy recipes. Get unbiased feedback on what makes their tastebuds tick in 2023. Also ask them to review your online presence - what draws them in versus makes them cringe? Key insights from the younger crowd are the secret ingredients!
Then, it’s makeover time! Spruce up your socials with polls, baking tutorials, and kitchen peeks. Recruit high school micro-influencers to review your scrumptious cakes. Ask followers to vote on new menu items and get a cross-generational perspective. Don't forget to also weave in vintage charm - share those nostalgic bakery photos and cherished memories. Blend the generations like the perfect batter.
I asked my friend BakerBuddy, an AI chef, for tips too. But it suggested frosted doughnut fries and Meyer lemon cake pops – trends from mid-2022 that are now out of style. It completely missed newer TikTok crazes like cronut grilled cheeses, dalgona cookie cups, and ube purple yam cannolis that have gone viral over the last few months. BakerBuddy's recommendations may not be as old-fashioned as Grandma's apple pie recipe, but at least that one is a timeless classic! This just shows that even current AI has only half-baked hunches about rapidly shifting food trends.
Lean on that experience and intuition, Mary! Combine it with fresh market research and your enduring passion, and you can reinvent this beloved community bakery for generations to come. And if you need an extra pinch of guidance, join my talk show! We’ll continue this conversation about keeping family businesses timeless yet current.
Wishing you success with all the sweetness of your soon-to-be-famous countdown cake!
XOXO,
Gabrielle*
